Spain and Portugal are the last Europe leg for Bid and Renée, and there are lots of neat snippets on places to see and things to do in both: 5 - Spain & Portugal - Chasing the Sun.

It is worth going back to the start rather than dropping into part five. Chasing the Sun runs to six parts and it is one continuous journey, from the northern coast of Brittany, up through the UK and into Finland running from the rain, back down through Germany, the Czech Republic, Switzerland and France, along the Riviera into Monaco, then Spain and Portugal, and finally across to Morocco.

What makes it hold up is that they were writing as they went, without knowing how it ended. The Iberian leg has them slowing down and staying put, which is what most long trips do in the last month whether or not anyone plans it.

If you are pointing a rail pass at the same corner, the practical thing to know is that Spain is the country where the pass does the least work. AVE and Alvia require a reservation and the pass-holder quota is small, so book those the day they open rather than the week you travel. Portugal is easier and slower, and the slow part is the point.
