Ouchy Beer festival

12-15 June 2003: I won't be there for it, but check the beer festival for your own Europe trip. Shame I'm missing a Swiss and international beer festival, but tip one back for me, okay? (And thanks Aoife, for the tip-off.)

The Fête de la Bière is still going, and it is still worth building a couple of days around, but two things have moved since this was written. It now runs in May rather than June, and it sets up on the Place du Marché in Vevey, the square right on the lake, with something like a hundred and twenty beers and ciders on.

Vevey is a better location than it sounds, and not only for this. It is fifteen minutes by train from Lausanne along the north shore of Lake Geneva, the vineyard terraces of Lavaux climb the hill directly behind the town, and the lake boats stop at the bottom of the square. You can drink in the afternoon, walk it off through the vines, and be back for the evening without touching a car.

Check the dates before you book anything around it. A four-day festival on a lakeside square in May prices the local hotels accordingly, and Lausanne is a cheap fifteen-minute train ride away when they do.
