New bar in Vevey, on the shores of Lake Geneva

Here is the part worth reporting: Le Bout du Monde is still open. A friend-of-a-friend's new bar, mentioned in passing in 2003, is still trading as a bistro with live music more than twenty years later. Almost nothing else linked from this blog managed that.

Vevey is the reason to go rather than the bar being an excuse. It sits on the north shore between Lausanne and Montreux, fifteen minutes by train from one and five from the other, with a market square opening straight onto the water and the Lavaux vineyard terraces rising behind it. Chaplin lived up the hill for the last twenty-five years of his life and is buried in the village above.

The practical note for anyone with a rail pass: this whole stretch of shore is a local train every fifteen minutes or so, no reservation, no fuss. The beer festival takes over the same square in May. If you are going to be near Montreux anyway, the extra five minutes to Vevey buys you a considerably less expensive evening.
