Europe Travel Info - an Intro

This one should seem pretty self-explanatory... And I guess it is. Tidbits on traveling Europe, destination info, cool Europe-focused threads from message boards, links to other sites, all that sort of stuff. There'll also be nuts-and-bolts, travel 101-type info as well.

Two decades on, the tidbits are still here and the nuts and bolts have mostly moved, so here is where they went.

• Timetables and reservations. Seat 61 for how a route actually works, and the national operator for the booking itself. The pass rules are the part people get wrong: this page covers which trains make you pay a seat fee on top.
• The rule that shapes a long trip. If you are not an EU citizen, the Schengen area gives you 90 days in any rolling 180. That is the constraint that decides most itineraries longer than three months, and it did not exist in this form when the category started.
• Message boards. Largely gone, and the loss is real. What replaced them is scattered and worse at the specific question, which is why a conductor or a hostel desk is still worth more than an hour of searching.

The destination writing on this site is the part that did not need updating. Weather, borders and prices move. What a place felt like at six in the morning does not.
